Dear Jerry,
It is hot and humid here in Central Florida. Today is July
the 2nd they are calling for 90% humidity with a heat
index of 103 degrees. What amazes me most is that
people come here on vacation in the summer. Why
don't they go somewhere a little cooler, like the surface
of the Sun.
My idea of a vacation is a visit to the beaches or one
of our natural springs. Anyplace but standing in line at,
Disney World, MGM Studios, Epcot, Animal Kingdom,
Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure.
An article in this Sunday's paper that said that most
kids would rather swim in the hotel pool than go to the
Theme Parks.

I recently received this email
Dear Jerry
After reading your May newsletter, I decided to revisit
your Fashion Fundamentals section. On the home page
of this section, you mentioned that you did not know
how jewelry was marketed to the larger stores. I know
one-way jewelry is marketed to one chain - Nordstrom,
because I asked a sales associate in the accessories
section of my local Nordstrom. She told me that
individual artists could bring their products to the
manager of the area they wish to market to, and then
ask for an appointment with the buyer of that area. If
the buyer likes the merchandise, they may try it in one
or two stores, or even for a weekend. If it is
successful, they will expand the line.
FYI, the item that prompted me to ask was a hand
painted silk scarf. The artist had approached an Oregon
store, and years later are still represented in stores
down the West Coast.

New Bead Artist |

I have three new Bead Artists this month.
Debbie Foland - I started making beaded jewelry after
9/11, when I began making red/white/blue bracelets to
sell in order to raise contributions for the 9/11-relief
fund. My jewelry making just took off from there. I
started searching the Web for beads and found that I
really enjoyed using a variety of beads to make my
jewelry. Jewelry making is a "de-stresser" for me.
Nancy Solwick - I developed a chronic pain condition,
at the beginning of 2002 and could not work anymore,
had limited physical ability and needed something to do
during my good days. I discovered beading met my
needs. At the time, it was just something to help pass
the time, and then I discovered I was good at it and
people wanted to buy and wear my creations.
Tamara Farion - A graduate of the Philadelphia College
of Textiles and Science, with a BS in Textile Design,
Tammy has been in the retail field for over 24 years.
But it was only since moving to Singapore that she was
able to pursue what she loves best: working with color
and texture to produce something simply beautiful.
After taking a few introductory courses with Tanja, she
knew she had found her niche. What started out as a
hobby has now turned into a full time business.
