LOOM BEADING / A PAINTERLY APPROACH
Have you ever wanted to use seed beads in a painterly way?? Learn to
create new colors in your beadwork by placing various colored seedbeads
side by side to create the visual effect of different colors. Fiber and
bead artist GAYLE LIMAN will demonstrate the color techniques of
pointillism, gradation, chroma bridges and simultaneous contrast by weaving
with beads. Gayle begins by discussing color theory and students will
create a grey scale, a color wheel and chroma bridge in preparation to
complete their final project - a loom beaded painting. You will then
draft a design on graph paper and draw in your color scheme with colored
pencils. Gayle will help students learn to draw on your own artist within
through exercises in visual imagery and the transfer of this imagery into
art. Participants will also learn warping and wefting techniques,
including how to make their own bead looms.
Gayle will accompany students to local Mayan markets. The 'huipiles' worn
by indigenous women and other woven goods found there often initiate
discussions on design and color, not to mention provide inspiration for
your own new creations. Gayle draws on her wide experience in colors,
design, weaving and beaded needle techniques to help students create from
the colorful environment around them. This workshop is appropriate for
both experienced and beginning bead artists.
Gayle is a nationally-recognized artist who has traveled and studied in
Guatemala. Her fiber arts work is included in the Amazonia Exhibit at the
Smithsonian Institute and other commisions hang nation-wide. She and her
husband John owned Cosecha Design - a bead shop in Minneapolis - for over
seven years where she taught a variety of beading classes, in addition to
teaching at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts and individually gifted
students. Gayle and her family now live in the beautiful Okanagan Valley
in British Columbia, Canada and are loving every minute of it's artistic
influence and laid-back pace.
ANTIGUA is any artist's dream location. It's a delightful small town with
an international ambiance and features spectacular visuals, fabulous
shopping, great little outdoor cafés and most importantly, warm hearted,
welcoming people. A highlight of this workshop will be on Sunday, when
you'll see 'alfombras' - carpets made of sawdust, flowers and pine needles
that families design and create in the streets in front of their homes.
You'll also have the opportunity to spend an afternoon in a nearby village
with a local indigenous family, trying your hand at making tortillas,
backstrap weaving and sampling a delicious typical meal of Pepian.
Students will also visit the breathtakingly gorgeous western highlands of
Guatemala, where they'll have the opportunity to see (and paint) colorful
Mayan markets and wide vistas of volcanoes rising out of the early morning
mists of LAKE ATITLAN.
Total cost, including tuition, (but not art supplies) airfare from most
major USA cities, lodging, hearty breakfasts, ground transporation and
field trips is US $2045. For more info email: info@artguat.org or call
