    Pewter is traditionally between 85 and 99 percent Tin, with the remainder consisting of copper acting as a hardener. The precise composition of pewter varies, since each casting foundry and shop uses its own proprietary formula. My vendors all say that these are lead free and made in the USA.

    Regardless of what you hear, today's pewter is perfectly safe.
    How can you tell if your pewter items have lead in them?

    Lead in pewter leaves a grayish-black patina on the surface. The degree of oxidation can vary depending on the environment.

    Lead free pewter can also oxidize over time, but it takes a great deal longer and the color is usually more grayish compared to the lead based pewter, which is a darker gray or black in color.
