Marketing 101 - do not forget the basics.

Know your products – Know how much it costs and how much you need to sell them for to make a profit.
You Should Know
(You may need to keep little cheat sheets for some these)

Pricing / Selection –
When comes to prices, give everybody the same price. If you give a friend a different price than another client, what will you do when they find out? When with an array of choices many customers will find that they have a hard time deciding what they want. Keep the selection simple.

Prices –
Develop standard prices for your basic models, then decided how much to charge for each upgrade.

Example: You make mother-name bracelets.
1. Come up with a price for one name with Silver Beads only.
2. Then how much for each additional strand.
3. Next, much you charge to add Birthstone Colors.
4. Want to add charms? Then how much for each charm.
5. Set the price with Gold Beads.

Example: Name Bracelet Pricing Information
Single Strand Name Bracelet (Silver) $40.00
Additional Strand / Name $20.00
Birthstones – 4 Per Strand $5.00
Charms $3.00 Each
Gold Accent Beads $1.00 each
All prices are based on a maximum of 7 letters.
Bracelets are 7 Inch in Length

I found these prices on the web 5/3/2003 and are for demonstration purposesonly.

Persistence –
All good things take time. This is especially true in marketing. Plan on a long-term commitment to your business and you will greatly increase your chance of success! Once you place an advertisement keep the ad advertisements in the same place, unless you are getting no return on that advertisement.

I have an almost Rainman like quality when it comes to my vendors.

When I go to a show if they are not there, I freak, if they have moved I freak. I do not like it when their print advertisements change.

How many times have you looked through a stack of magazines for a particular advertisement only not to find it? I do it a lot, but my wife never does.

Target your Customers –
There are always excellent opportunities to target your audience.
Your Target Audience for Jewelry Will Be Females With Disposable Income.

  • If you sell charm bracelets then how about targeting the high schools, dance schools, and sport teams. As long as you are looking at schools, do not forget the drama and speech clubs.
  • If you are targeting sports teams, how about the cheerleaders, POP Warner, the player’s parents, grand parents, etc.
  • If they already have a charm bracelet, is it getting too small? Have they just gone out for a team and need a charm added?
  • Do you do Name-Bracelets? Have you looked at birth announcements in the paper? You could cut out the announcement lament it, and mail it to the proud parents along with one of your brochures.
  • You could do the same with Wedding / Engagement announcements. A nice charm bracelet would be the perfect bridesmaid gift.
  • How about the Anniversaries published in the paper. You do know the Anniversary stones; you could make the perfect gift.
  • Is there a newsletter for your town, or a school newspaper? Take out a small ad. Announce a jewelry workshop, beading demonstration, or that you have in the latest school charms.

I am sure that you see that there are tons of ways to target your specific market.
Your goal is to find a niche and dominate it.

Display your Products –
Custom Jewelry Crafters face a challenge in that the traditional buyers of jewelry like to touch, try on and see products before making a purchase.

You should always be sure to carry some sample products with you, also carry ready-to-sell items. You can order some jewelry carrying cases from several companies. The ones I like best are called rolls. You can put you pieces in the , rolls held in place by Velcro or elastic and then roll them up. One of these will cost you around $11.00.

Be sure to keep you jewelry clean and polished. After someone has tried on one of your pieces wipe it down to remove body oils. With a good polishing cloth You should store the pieces in airtight plastic bags, to minimize contact with air. If you can, get some 3-M Anti-Tarnish strips, these last about 6 Months and will keep your jewelry tarnish free. Light tarnish or oxidation can be removed with silver polishing cloths available at major supermarkets, hardware stores or jewelry shops.

Packaging is important if you do not have the latest Rio-Grande Packaging and Display Catalog, or the Fetpak Catalog you should order them from their websites (They are Free). Both of these have hundreds of the latest items for displaying your work.

Did you get your free business cards?

You can use these as earring holders, by simply punching small holes in them.
Since you can get business cards free, have some made up just for this purpose.

Your Existing Client Base –
Tell everybody that you have given jewelry too that you are now selling your crafts. If you have collected a mailing list of people, send out periodic announcements.

These people have already bought from you, so they know exactly what to expect. If you have not started collecting email addresses, shame on you, start collecting them now.

Keep in contact with your customers and find out if there are any new marketing opportunities in their life.

  • If they already have a charm bracelet, is it getting too small? Have they or their children gone out for any new sports? How about the cheerleading, dance, new hobbies, etc.
  • Have they any new arrivals, do they need a new name added to their Name-Bracelets?
  • What about Wedding or Engagements – a nice charm bracelet is the perfect bridesmaid gift.
  • Do they have any big Anniversaries coming up? You do know the Anniversary stones; you could make the perfect gift.

Fairs, Events and Festivals –
Jewelry buying is very much an impulse-event, but it does not have to be. Keep business cards or small leaflets containing your business name, phone number and your email address to give to people. Are their any special events that are happen around you? They do not have to be Craft Shows. Just be sure that you have lots of business cards to pass out.

If you create thematic jewelry then you can really take advantage of these events, by wearing you pieces and just leaving business cards lying around.

Consignment Shops and Boutiques –
If you sell your crafts on consignment, place a small sign (many consignment shops will allow this, but be sure to ask!) in your display with a message about you. A stack of business cards can also be an effective way to help people remember you when they get home.

If you have been trying to get your products into shops without success try this trick.

A few weeks before you approach the shops, have a few friends call or visit the shops and ask if they carry anything made be you. Space it out so that it is not so obvious. When you do get to talk to the owner or buyer, they will have heard your name, and think that there is a demand for your jewelry.
