  • Tucson  "The Greatest Gem Show in the World" - Each year in February is the largest gem show of its kind in the world with approximately 20 different shows being held at the same time.
The Main Show: All of the various shows grew out of the original Tucson Gem & Mineral Show (TGMS), also known as the "Main Show", that is held at the Tucson Convention Center by the Tucson Gem & Mineral Society. It is not called the main show for nothing - it is BIG. All of the dealers hold their best specimens to display at the main show. As with any show, there are display cases, lectures, wholesale and retail dealers. But at the TGMS everything is bigger and better than any other show. The museums displaying minerals in the cases, display their best new acquisitions. The competition display cases are the best in the USA. The mineral dealers are among the best in the world. In addition to the show, there is simultaneously a mineral symposium of lectures usually focused on a particular subject or region in the world. The lectures that are part of the mineral symposium are given by mineral experts from around the world.

Beading Workshops & Beading Retreats

You can find mini workshops at some of the shows...
  • Art Workshops in Guatemala  Have you ever wanted to use seed beads in a painterly way?? Learn to create new colors in your beadwork by placing various colored seedbeads side by side to create the visual effect of different colors. Fiber and bead artist GAYLE LIMAN will demonstrate the color techniques of pointillism, gradation, chroma bridges and simultaneous contrast by weaving with beads. Gayle begins by discussing color theory and students will create a grey scale, a color wheel and chroma bridge in preparation to complete their final project - a loom beaded painting. You will then draft a design on graph paper and draw in your color scheme with colored pencils. Gayle will help students learn to draw on your own artist within through exercises in visual imagery and the transfer of this imagery into art. Participants will also learn warping and wefting techniques, including how to make their own bead looms.
